Brief Encounters

I looked up at the night sky,
and asked --
how brief encounters
could make changes so vast?

With a billion inquisitive eyes,
the stars replied.
Why is it
that when planets collide,

magma flows
rock sublimates
life soars
but –

the moon takes a thousand years to announce itself
along the ocean's shores.
